Forty South African men, nominated and voted for by their communities for their contribution to the growth and welfare of those communities and their own families, are to be honoured at the inaugural Men of the Year gala event.
The event takes place at 19h00 on Friday, 18 November 2011 at the Protea Hotel, OR Tambo, Kempton Park. Thembisa Stella Ndabeni, Deputy Minister of Communications, is guest speaker at the event.
"The Men of the Year programme is part of the Brothers for Life and SABC Education partnership that through the power of radio mobilises men to improve the health and well being of families and communities. Over the past six months, the Brothers for Life talk shows engaged men on their responsibilities in the realisation of improved health outcomes in their homes and communities. As part of the talk show, communities were asked to identify ordinary men in their midst who champion the Brothers for Life values," explains Jo Neethling, commissioning editor at SABC Education's public information and social development unit.
Brothers for Life is a collaborative effort by the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC), the Department of Health, USAID/PEPFAR, Johns Hopkins Health and Education in South Africa (JHHESA), Sonke Gender Justice, the United Nations System in South Africa and over100 other civil society partners working in the field of HIV prevention and health.
Before making their way to the inaugural event the Brothers for Life and Senior Producers from Umhlobo Wenene fm, Thobela fm, Phalaphala fm, Munghana Lonene fm, Ukhozi fm, Lesedi fm, Ligwalagwala fm, Motsweding fm, Ikwekwezi fm, XKfm and Trufm will tour the SABC and be available for radio interviews from 14h30.
